the adoption process

To adopt a dog, here's what you need to know....

Step One

Complete an enquiry form and tell us what kind of dog you are looking for

Step Two

Make an appointment to come and meet the dogs. You will need to provide ID

Step Three

Find a dog you like, you will need to complete an application form & book in a homecheck

Step Four

Complete the final paperwork & take your new dog home.

The final stage of the process is to book an appointment to complete the remaining paperwork, sign the adoption agreement and take your dog home.

Your dog will need to be secured safely in your car either by way of a harness or crate. We can fit your dog for a harness during if you would like. The prices for our harnesses range from £20 to £50 and all proceeds go towards the costs in caring for the dogs.

We also have leads, collars, beds, toys, food and treats. All the proceeds made from anything you spend on your dog in our shop is used towards paying for the care, vet and medicines for the dogs in our care.

Our annual vet bill exceeds £50,000 per year on average  (excluding Romania) and with running costs that exceed £9,000 per month its not hard to see how every little helps!

the adoption fee

Taking care of any animal isn’t cheap and this is especially true when it comes to running a dog rescue.

So, like all organisations we have a an adoption fee donation to help towards the costs of running the rescue. Our costs include vet visits, worming, flea treatments, vaccinations, training, food, cleaning products, waste removal, medicines, poo bags, heating and cooling the kennels, supplements and such like. In fact, our UK vet bills alone on average cost over £3,000 per month. That’s before we get on to the running costs which exceed £10k per month.

Unlike other dog rescue organisations, we don’t currently receive any help in the form of grants so we don’t waste a single penny. Most people do not realise the founder of the rescue works full time to help support the rescue running costs and dedicates her free time to looking after the dogs, including being on call every single night looking after the sick and needy dogs.

Every single penny of the adoption fee is used towards covering the costs and looking after the dogs. In addition, the adoption fee also helps demonstrate the commitment of the adopter to their new furry friend. This is a fact that we never under estimate here at M&GT.

So now you know why we charge an adoption fee, let’s tell you how much it is…

Our adoption fee is, therefore a donation towards our costs and ranges from £350-£550. In addition to the adoption fee donation we do charge a fixed microchip registration administration fee of £30. We offer lifetime rescue support and backup on all microchip transfers.

When comparing our adoption fee to other organisations like the RSPCA or Dogs Trust (RSPCA in Derby have an adoption fee that starts from £350) we believe our adoption fee is very fair especially when taking into account that these organisations get lots of financial help whereas we don’t.

Most people don’t realise that saving a dogs life from a kill centre usually costs between £1000 & £2000. Costs include KC release fees, vaccinations, vet treatment, blood tests, travel costs, interim boarding and more.

Please be aware, our adoption fee is non-refundable.

We sell everything you need to take your dog home in our shop.

All the proceeds go towards paying for the dogs care, vet fees and medicines.

We really appreciate your support.

Some of our dogs are in foster homes to help get them get ready for a family home of their own, so please be prepared for this, as it may mean travelling elsewhere to meet the dog

You will need to bring with you a form of ID  (these can include a copy of your driving licence or passport

Please note, we will still consider your application even if you don’t have a garden, in these cases we just need to know your proposals for walking your dog and the toileting arrangements. We will also need to know details of nearby woods or parks where you can exercise the dog.

If you decide to proceed with the adoption, please remember there is an adoption fee between £350 & £550 to pay and a microchip transfer fee of £30. You can find out all about our adoption fee by clicking here

Once you have chosen a dog, the next step is to book you in for an Induction Session with your new dog. Whether you are an experienced dog owner or never had a dog before, we will run through your dogs needs and behaviours. We will talk you through what your dogs needs to ensure a smooth transition.

All dogs are different and it’s important you understand your new dogs traits and behaviours, fears and potential triggers for bad behaviour and what to do about them.

Integrating your new rescue into your home takes time and patience< it is important to ensure the dog is not overwhelmed and you don’t expect too much too quickly.

During your induction we will run through the feeding routine, feeding traits and positive reinforcement training using specific treats and other methods
