Inspired by two very special dogs.....Max's Story
It is our understanding that Max was born in the UK, together with his sister Lola and their original owner they moved to Spain. After some time, Max’s owner had to travel back to the UK for work and Max & his sister were left in another persons care.
But this person failed to look after Max & Lola, they were abandoned most of the time and lived in a yard, starving with no water and becoming more and more depressed, stressed, hungry and lonely.
After much time had passed, some other people took action and decided to rescue them. But by the time they did, Lola had sadly died from starvation and dehydration and Max too,, was near death.
No one thought Max would survive the night and the following 24 hours would be a fight for life.
Max’s coat was so matted he had to be literally cut out of it.
Max had so little strength left he could barely lift his head, let alone stand. The fight to save him began. He slept bundled up and carried by his rescuer, like a baby, for several days and nights. His rescuers never gave up on him and little by little Max started to regain his strength.
I first met Max in 2014 in Spain, he was living with many other dogs including George and I fell in love with him. If I could have brought him home with me straight away I would have.
Finally, in February 2015 Max and George came to live with me and despite being totally allergic to them both, I was incredibly happy to have them.

We had so many adventures, so many good times and a few bad. Both Max & George had leishmaniasis and making sure they got the right treatment was, at times, incredibly challenging.
Max & George went everywhere with me, too work, on holidays, day trips to the beach and many a fun dog show.
Keeping both Max’s & George’s leish under controlled became a priority that involved me flying to Spain and speaking with experienced vets, driving them to a specialist vet in London, paying for expensive treatments, learning how to inject them with special medicine, understanding their testing needs.
It was because of all this, I began talking with other dog owners that had their own challenges with leish positive dogs and the beginnings of the Max & George Trust began. You can read the full story here.
In 2016, Max was the victim of poisoning on the local heath where we walked. He was one of around 11 dogs that suffered various degrees of sickness at that time. Witnesses allegedly claimed to have seen the local cricket club placing poison down in an attempt to kill the moles that had been digging and creating an incredible amount of molehills everywhere. We will never ever know for certain the case, but the RSPCA got involved and it made the local news. Luckily, despite collapsing and having some kind of fit, Max survived. He was lucky.
In 2017, Max’s leish had flared up and he was prescribed a course of treatment known as Miltefosine. It is horrid stuff. Miltefosine is a newer treatment for leish and we had always previously used Glucantime to treat him.

Devastatingly, Max passed away, at home in March 2017. He never completed his last treatment and it wasn’t nearly enough time but it is because of everything we went through with Max and of course, George that following Max’s death, The Max & George Trust really started to become something.
It is because of both Max & George, we have managed to save many other dogs with leish that would have otherwise been put to sleep. Dogs like Lady, Lilly, Teddy, Lady Lou, Bezzie and more.
If you would like to help us help dogs like Max and would like to make a donation in Max’s memory, or in the name of a dog you have lost, it would be greatly appreciated and you can do so by clicking this link make a donation.
